Punch & Judy e.V. was founded in 1991 and is managed by parents. It helps bi-lingual children growing up in a German-speaking environment learn and understand English and German in an international setting.

About us

Punch & Judy hosts a diverse community of children from all around the world. Initially founded by German-British and German-American families, the kindergarten has included local families from Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, and Australia.

The Kindergarten has been in Bremen at Hermann Böse Str. 35 since May 1998 and boasts four spacious and bright rooms including a tumble room and quiet room.

Concept

Punch & Judy offers a bilingual and multicultural learning environment. Our approach is modeled on ‘one person – one language’ with equal emphasis on English and German. Our team of teachers comprises native English and German speakers who use only their native language when communicating to help foster bilingual language development. In addition to language learning approach, we celebrate festivities of both the German and English speaking cultures; including Fasching, Halloween, Lantern walk, Valentine’s Day and Christmas. As part of our community engagement, we include visits from local organizations like the fire department or the tooth fairy.

How old does my child need to be to attend kindergarten?

Children between 3 and 6 years old are welcome.

What languages are spoken in the kindergarten?

We are a bilingual/multicultural kindergarten where both English and German is spoken. It is required that English is spoken in the family; i.e., the child must be speaking English on a daily basis with a fully fluent parent or guardian.

How long is a day in kindergarten?

The kindergarten is generally open from from 7:30 to 15:30. Exact hours may vary based on need and availability.

What happens if my child gets sick?

If your child becomes ill, we will notify you immediately and ask you to pick them up. It is important that all parents keep their contact information up to date so we can reach them in case of an emergency.

How do you prepare my child for school?

We have a comprehensive curriculum that promotes children’s cognitive, language, social, and emotional development. To help work with parents and ensure children are prepared for school, teachers will have an annual parent-teacher meeting to update them on their children’s progress.

What does the 'hot lunch' look like?

All meals are freshly prepared and we work with the caterer to provide a balanced diet that meets the needs of the children.

What does play look like in the kindergarten?

In our kindergarten, we highly prioritize play as an integral aspect of child development. We offer a diverse range of activities that foster children’s creativity and imagination, encompassing craft projects and an extensive selection of toys.

What is the cooperation with parents like?

We work closely with parents to ensure that children’s needs and requirements are met. We regularly update parents on their child’s progress and invite them to kindergarten events and activities.
